Early Detection in Children

Spotting eye problems early gives a child the best chance for normal visual development. Regular screening and prompt treatment help prevent permanent vision loss and support healthy growth.

The first several years of life are a critical window for vision. When issues such as misalignment or unequal prescriptions are found and treated early, the brain can learn to see clearly in both eyes, and long-term problems can be avoided.

Parents, teachers, and caregivers can often notice early warning signs.

  • Squinting or closing one eye
  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Head tilting or turning
  • Tearing or discharge that does not clear
  • Difficulty focusing on near or distant objects
  • Complaints of headaches or eye strain

A pediatric ophthalmologist is trained to examine children, diagnose complex eye conditions, and perform surgery when needed. Dr. Glen Bianchi, who completed fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology, leads our specialized care for young patients.

Common Pediatric Eye Conditions

Common Pediatric Eye Conditions

Several eye disorders appear in childhood. Learning about them helps families understand the importance of timely care.

Amblyopia, often called lazy eye, develops when the brain begins to ignore blurred input from one eye, most often between birth and age nine. It affects around two to four percent of children. Glasses, patching, or other treatments begun early can restore sight to 20/20 and prevent permanent loss.

Strabismus refers to eyes that do not line up together. The misalignment can be horizontal or vertical and is usually caused by an imbalance in the brain pathways that control eye movement. Without treatment, strabismus may lead to depth-perception problems and lasting vision loss in one eye. Early diagnosis and, when needed, surgical correction give the best outcomes.

Congenital tear duct blockage affects many newborns. Symptoms include persistent tearing, mucus collection, and eyelids that stick shut in the morning. Most blockages clear on their own by the first birthday. Gentle massage and, if infection occurs, eyedrops may help. When the duct remains blocked, a brief probing procedure usually solves the problem.
